What Are Dental Crowns?
If you have a single tooth that is damaged or worn down, you might be able to protect it with a dental crown. Sometimes known as a dental cap, crowns are custom made to fit over the needed tooth and are colored to blend with your natural teeth for a seamless, natural finish. At KFA Dental Excellence in Farmingdale, NY, a dental crown may be used to treat tooth decay, strengthen a weak tooth, restore a crack, or mask discoloration. Drs. Kahn, Ferrari, Aldieri, and their incredible dental team can create crowns with different materials to match your needs. Schedule an appointment to learn about how a custom dental crown could repair and strengthen your damaged tooth while improving the overall appearance and health of your mouth.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?
A crown could be beneficial for you for many reasons. They can be used to cover a weak, decaying tooth in order to keep it from chipping, or can even be used to hold together a cracked tooth. Crowns may also be used to fix a worn-down or loose tooth. They can be used to strengthen a tooth with a cavity that is too large for a tooth-colored filling, could be used to help a dental bridge, or could even hide teeth that are misshapen or discolored. Dental crowns are a great way to enhance the overall health of your mouth, and in some cases, they could even be done in one visit using our CEREC same-day restoration system. If you have questions about whether or not you qualify for a dental crown, contact KFA Dental Excellence today.
How Will You Create My Dental Crown?
At your consultation, someone from the KFA Dental Excellence team will take impressions of your teeth so your crown can be custom made to fit your needs. In some cases, a temporary crown can be used to cover your tooth while your custom crown is being made. In other cases, we can use our CEREC technology to create a crown that same day. As soon as your dental crown is ready, the treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic, or another sedation technique if we need to soothe any fears or anxieties. When you are ready, we will prepare your tooth by removing any areas of decay, then file down the enamel to make room for your crown. Your crown will be glued onto the tooth or connected to an implant. Once set, we will adjust the fit of the crown so your bite is correct.
Is there a Recovery Period for Getting a Dental Crown?
Unless sedation was used, you will be able to leave our office once your crown is placed to continue your daily activities. Someone from our team will go over the best way to care for your dental crown, including any foods that should be avoided and the best way to keep it clean. During your yearly examinations at KFA Dental Excellence, we will evaluate your crown and adjust it for comfort. We will let you know when the crown needs to be replaced, but with proper care, it is likely to last for several years. If you notice any problems with your crown (if it falls out or is loose), contact our office right away so we can address it immediately.
