What sedation options are available?

We offer a variety of sedation options, depending on the level of sedation needed. Our commonly requested sedation dentistry methods are:

Nitrous oxide sedation: This is often referred to as laughing gas and is a standard type of sedation that provides mild sedation. Patients typically will be able to leave the office on their own.

Intravenous (IV) sedation: This form of sedation is administered directly into an individual's veins to completely calm them during their procedure. At Ferrari & Aldieri Dental Associates, we offer IV sedation upon request for our patients.

Can I Get Sedation?

While not everyone has a great deal of fear and anxiety about going to the dentist, there are many that do. Should you suffer from severe fear and anxiety at the idea of routine dental appointments, then you are probably a great candidate for sedation dentistry. We have a variety of sedation options available so we will ask you questions regarding your lifestyle and medical history to help determine which sedation option will be most effective for you. On top of sedation dentistry, we do offer cable TV, massage chairs, and noise-canceling headphones as an additional measure to help you remain calm and feel comfortable while in our office.

What Can I Expect From Sedation?

The process for sedation dentistry differs from person to person based on which method you've selected. For nitrous oxide sedation, we will temporarily calm you by putting a mask over your nose, which administers nitrous oxide gas. With IV sedation, you will be eased into a heavily relaxed state prior to the procedure through the use of medication from an IV.

Is there Any Follow-Up With Sedation?

We will carefully go over what to expect before and after your procedure and answer any questions or concerns that you may have. In some cases, you'll need to have somebody else drive you home after treatment. In others, you will be fine to drive yourself. After your procedure, getting rest and rehydrating are important to feeling more like yourself. You might be tired for the rest of the day, but that is normal and should fade within a day or so. After your procedure, you will have conquered your fear of the dentist and will be on your way to having a healthy mouth!

Sedation Dentistry FAQ

Is nitrous oxide safe for children?
Nitrous oxide is a reliable sedation treatment that’s been used in dentistry for several generations. Over the years, it has been refined and paired with state-of-the-art technology to become one of the most reliable tools for overcoming dental anxiety. It is officially recognized by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as an effective sedation technique for children. Studies indicate that nitrous oxide is well-tolerated in the vast majority of children, but some may experience short-term feelings of nausea.

Can I drive after IV sedation dentistry?
No, even though the sedation medication is short-acting, you still won't be ready to drive or make important decisions, operate heavy machinery, or undergo strenuous activity for the rest of the day. You will need to bring someone or arrange a ride home from Ferrari & Aldieri Dental Associates on the day of the sedation method.

Can I eat or drink before the sedation dentistry procedure?
Generally, you are able to have food up to six hours prior to sedation being administered, clear liquids two hours or before, and nothing by mouth after that window. Prior to sedation, you will be given detailed instructions to be following after your procedure in Farmingdale, NY. Depending on your existing conditions and the type of work you’re having done, these instructions may vary.
